An experimental station

Jodrell Bank's scientific story began in December 1945. Physicist Bernard Lovell brought former military radar equipment to the University of Manchester's botanical station in Cheshire after electrical interference made the equipment difficult to use in the city.

Lovell intended to investigate cosmic rays. The radar instead detected echoes from the ionised trails left by meteors, opening a programme of meteor research and helping establish radio astronomy at the site. In 1947 the team completed a fixed 66-metre Transit Telescope, an early large instrument built before the fully steerable telescope that would define Jodrell Bank.

Building the Mark I

Lovell worked with engineer Sir Charles Husband on a much larger, fully steerable radio telescope. The 76-metre Mark I Telescope was completed in 1957, allowing astronomers to point a sensitive dish at different parts of the sky.

In October 1957, soon after it became operational, the telescope tracked the third stage of the rocket that launched Sputnik 1. This precise wording matters: the observation followed the launch rocket's third stage, not the satellite itself.

The telescope was renamed the Lovell Telescope in 1987, on its 30th anniversary. It remains the dominant structure on the site and a working research instrument.

More telescopes and a wider network

The 25-metre Mark II Telescope became operational in 1964 on the location of the earlier Transit Telescope. Work at Jodrell Bank also developed ways to combine signals from telescopes separated over long distances, the approach known as interferometry.

Research, engagement and World Heritage

The Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre opened in 2011. In November 2012, the organisation developing the Square Kilometre Array moved into its headquarters building at Jodrell Bank; that building officially opened in 2013.

Jodrell Bank Observatory was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019. The First Light Pavilion, which interprets the history of the site for visitors, opened in 2022.
