More than one telescope

Jodrell Bank's heritage significance belongs to a whole scientific landscape, not only to the Lovell Telescope. Large instruments, control and engineering buildings, modest early structures and traces of dismantled experiments show how radio astronomy changed across the site.

Engineering preserved at full scale

The Lovell Telescope and the Mark II Telescope are both Grade I listed. Their structures preserve evidence of the engineering needed to make large radio telescopes steerable, controllable and useful for research.

Smaller buildings and less visible traces add a different kind of evidence. They connect the famous dishes to workshops, control rooms and earlier experimental instruments, showing that scientific change depended on an evolving site rather than a single invention.

Continuity and change

The landscape records successive phases: improvised post-war radar experiments, fixed early instruments, large steerable dishes and the later distributed array. Some structures survive, some have been adapted and others are known through physical traces.
